AKOUBA

HER STORY

Akouba was born in June 2017 and was seized in a private home in December 2020. At the time, she had several health problems, including a crippled hand and chronic malnutrition. Akouba then underwent rehabilitation sessions with a physiotherapist and an osteopath from the Abidjan School to help her regain mobility in her hand.

Unfortunately, her physically handicapped hand does not allow her to move around as well as her peers, but Akouba is a courageous girl and has made great progress since she was taken in: she can now pick up objects with her disabled hand! A real victory for the teams.

Despite the accidents she has suffered, she is regaining her confidence and getting back on her feet. The caretakers need to pay particular attention to her, as the traumas and the handicap she has suffered with her hand mean they need to be particularly vigilant in order to best support Akouba in her evolution as a chimpanzee.

She also had the misfortune to be injured in the forest, and we had to rush her to Abidjan for surgery on her face and hindquarters. She proved once again that she's very brave.

So we pay special attention to her in order to restore her confidence and help her overcome her physical ailments. She needs a little more attention than the others, which makes her a very endearing chimpanzee.

This certainly doesn't detract from her zest for life, which will undoubtedly be one of her greatest assets in her future life as a chimpanzee.

What's more, gluttony is part of her repertoire ;)

Fun fact about d’Akouba :  she's a rascal; she often strays from the group and "oops" a little moment of inattention on the part of the caretakers and she sneaks back into camp!

⚠ Chimpanzees are not pets!

These chimpanzees are orphans who have fallen victim to the illegal bushmeat and pet trade. They are being rehabilitated at the Akatia sanctuary.
