HER STORY
The rescue of Baby Néka
We set off from Abidjan to pick her up in San Pedro, in collaboration with the Eaux et Forêts teams who were responsible for transporting her to San Pedro.
Baby Néka, that's her first name, comes from the village of Néka on the Taï border. She was found in the forest 🌳 by the president of the Jeunesse de Néka, Youkou Arnaud Hermane.
Indeed, after hearing the baby crying, he dropped her off again 🌳 in the same place on the advice of the village chief, hoping that she would be reunited with her mom. The next day, however, the baby was still there. The mother's disappearance remains a mystery, as chimpanzees are considered sacred and protected in the vicinity of the village.
Arnaud had the onerous task of looking after it for around 1 month. Special thanks to Arnaud 🙏 but also to the village chief, the villagers and the Eaux et Forêts teams in the vicinity of Néka and San Pedro.
Our first concern is to provide the necessary care for a baby weighing 3 kg, between 5 and 8 months and therefore very fragile.
After a check-up, it turns out that Neka has serious teething problems due to a diet that was not adapted to her needs (mainly because she ate too much sugar)... A dentist will be coming to treat her.

⚠ Chimpanzees are not pets!
These chimpanzees are orphans who have fallen victim to the illegal bushmeat and pet trade. They are being rehabilitated at the Akatia sanctuary.
